Robert Fleming’s poem, Elevator of Blood, is directly inspired by Stanley Kubrick’s 1979 horror classic, THE SHINING, which, itself, is an adaptation of the equally classic novel by Stephen King first published in 1977.
Robert’s poem and his recording summarize what has been, over the years, documented as a particularly intense Kubrick shoot. Robert captures this intensity as it relates to the infamous and beautifully captured elevator doors of the Overlook Hotel which [spoiler alert] open to reveal a tsunami of blood. It’s easily one of the most visually memorable and disquieting scenes ever filmed.

Renowned Kansas Book Critic Jeffrey D. Keeten Provides Introduction to New Release

A graduate of the University of Arizona and current resident of Dodge City, Kansas, he has published more than 3,700 reviews for Goodreads and other sites.

Welcome to Gravelight Press, a start-up that publishes horror. Horror, of course, covers a wide range of subject material. We’re not looking for the kind of explicit gore you’re going to find in the works of Jack Ketchum or Edward Lee. Nothing wrong with those authors, and if you appreciate their work there’s certainly nothing wrong with that either. It’s just not the type of horror we’re looking to cultivate.

Rather, we’re interested in the types of stories that give you the shivers but are not repulsive or explicit to the point that they might have been authored by the town medical examiner. Stories that involve rape, incest, extreme physical torture, animal cruelty, graphically explicit sex, racism, homophobism, or the harming of children are all off the table, so don’t bother submitting to us if any of those are your thing. We’re also not interested in the “Angels versus Demons” angle or tales pitting Heaven against Hell “with the balance of the entire planet at stake!”
Monster tales, ghost stories, Arkham House-esque weird fiction, and commercial horror the likes of King, Matheson, and (early) Barker are welcome. If you have an original take on public domain characters (such as James Lovegrove’s Sherlock Holmes/Cthulhu mash-up) we’d be interested in hearing from you. Most of all, we’re looking for well-written tales that keep readers on the edge of their seats.
We’re presently working with R. David Fulcher, an author well known among fans of horror fiction. GLP will be publishing a collection of Mr. Fulcher’s tales under the working title THE DARK HARVEST. We’re targeting an on-sale date of August 2021 and will provide updates as they become available.
Gravelight is now live and is one of three new imprints under the Devil’s Party Press umbrella. With DPP focusing on literary fiction, launching genre-specific imprints suited to the types of fiction we’re most interested in: sci-fi, crime, and horror.
All horror titles previously published through DPP will now publish through Gravelight. Same great horror but with…ya know…more horror.
Gravelight Press is the first imprint of award-winning publisher Devil’s Party Press. If you follow DPP at all, you know that we took a hiatus for 2020 in order that we might grow and improve our service to authors. One way we are doing that is through imprints.
Our first public burning was a huge success.
Gravelight Press will serve to house the best in horror that also just happens to be written by authors over the age of 40.
Our books win awards, have amazing covers, and are cared for from start to finish as if we’d written them ourselves. We have spent our lives writing and editing our own work and others, and it shows in the books we select to publish, and the awards the books win.
Authors never pay us a fee for a full-length work, and we have a new, author-friendlier contract crafted by Daniel Stevens. Submissions to anthologies ask a minimal $10 submission fee that is more than returned through author copies if their work is chosen.
